Fastnacht Day offers tasty treats in Pennsylvania Dutch Country
Wake up early on "Fat Tuesday" in Lancaster County, and you'll be able to take part in a tasty tradition of the area. It's Fastnacht Day here, and to celebrate, locals and visitors alike will take advantage of local baked delicacies famous to local kitchens and only available at this time of year. This year, Fastnacht Day, which will take place Tuesday, February 20, will see long lines at bakeries and outside church kitchens, where thousands of the Pennsylvania German delicacies will be consumed.
According to Pennsylvania Dutch folklore, the tradition of serving fastnachts - hearty, doughnut-like pastries - comes from the tradition of "using up the fat in the kitchen" before Lent. Today, thousands of the baked goods are deep-fried and served plain or with a sugar topping on the day before Ash Wednesday, also known as "Fat Tuesday." A fastnacht or two with morning coffee is the perfect way to start the day in Lancaster County.
For more information on fastnachts, please contact the Pennsylvania Dutch Convention & Visitors Bureau. The Bureau is dedicated to promoting Lancaster County as an ideal vacation destination, with its Amish, heritage, scenic back roads, opportunities for family fun, and all that make the area a special and memorable place to stay.
