Visit Mariposa County and Yosemite

Mariposa, California - For travelers desiring to get away from it all, Mariposa County, home to Yosemite National Park, offers visitors some of the world’s most scenic landscapes and is brimming with history and culture. Nestled against the rolling foothills and towering peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Central California, travelers of all ages can take a step back in time for a relaxing yet educational vacation.

Mariposa County has long been known as a gateway to Yosemite, yet tucked away like buried gold, there are quaint historic towns and outdoor adventures waiting to be discovered,” said Susan Crain of the Mariposa County Visitors Bureau. “Families, couples and solo travelers alike, will find a fulfilling vacation experience in Mariposa County, whether they’d like to go camping, whitewater rafting, museum hopping or explore our agri-nature tourism program.”

New to Mariposa County is the agri-nature tourism program, which allows visitors to partake in a hands-on, educational experience at local agricultural and nature destinations. Visitors can explore a variety of family owned and operated Mariposa County farms, including the Country Kitchen Herb Garden where they can tour the garden and learn the folklore of herbs. At Mariposa County’s wineries, visitors can taste wine and learn first-hand from the winemakers about viticulture. For more adventurous groups, the Bull Run Ranch offers an authentic Western experience, complete with steer roping demonstrations and beginners lessons taught by working cowboys.

Mariposa County – which doesn’t have any stoplights – is comprised of four distinct geographic areas, each with its own offerings.

North
Mariposa County’s north side is home to the small community of Coulterville - a flashback to the past and a California State Historical site. Hotel Jeffrey, built in 1854, is still a functioning hotel and has entertained the likes of President Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir. Coulterville is also home to the Northern Mariposa County History Center, housed in a 150-year-old building, and featuring revolving exhibits related to pioneer families, the Gold Rush and subsequent mining operations. The center also boasts an excellent collection of clothing, accessories, school desks, books, dolls, toys, models of early vehicles, and drug store shelves that still contain bottles, jars, elixirs and medicines. Hands-on exhibits for children make this an educational experience for the entire family. For exploring the outdoors, Lakes McClure and McSwain offer a variety of water sports, fishing, picnicking and more.

East
The eastern portion of Mariposa County is home to one of the world’s most beautiful natural wonders, Yosemite National Park. Guests can visit the famous Half Dome or El Capitan, or hike to one of the park’s majestic waterfalls. The Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias impresses visitors with some of the most magnificent, oldest and largest living trees in the world. Badger Pass, opened for skiing in 1934, is the oldest ski area still in use in the U.S. and today is a modernized family-oriented ski resort. Communities inside Yosemite such as Wawona , and Fish Camp just outside the park, offer a range of Yosemite accommodations from bed and breakfasts to cabin rentals to four-diamond hotels such as the Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite. Visitors can also enjoy the Victorian style Wawona Hotel and the classic Wawona Golf Course.

South
Those venturing into Mariposa County's southern end can explore the historic town of Mariposa, the county seat. Mariposa is home to the oldest Superior Courthouse west of the Mississippi River, the Mariposa County Courthouse built in 1854. Historical revelers should also be sure to visit Mariposa’s many museums, including the California State Mining and Mineral Museum and the Mariposa Museum and History Center. The Museum and History Center is a genuine portrait of people and life in Mariposa County from the migration of its first inhabitants, through the Indian and Spanish periods, to California’s exciting gold rush. Mariposa’s historic downtown offers guests friendly hotels, quaint Mariposa restaurants and great antiquing and shopping. Special events held throughout the year and an active arts community add to the ambiance of this charming town. Visitors can enjoy a night at the Mariposa symphony or music and a walk along the creek parkway.

West
The Western portions of the county encompass the rolling foothills of Catheys Valley and the small ghost town of Hornitos. In the late 1840’s, Hornitos, which means “little ovens” in Spanish, was a temporary camp for Mexicans who had arrived in California to strike it rich during the gold rush. During the gold rush the deceased were buried above ground in graves that resemble little ovens, hence the name of the town.

Scottsdale CVB website reaches expanding gay and lesbian travel market

September 13, 2006
The Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau has launched new marketing efforts in response to the soaring gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) travel market, which is expected to increase by more than $20 billion over the next five years according to Mintel research.

With more than $76.5 billion expended annually, the GLBT segment is a booming niche travel market. Scottsdale’s luxury resorts, world-class shopping and dining, and its active art and cultural scene make it a popular travel destination for this niche.

“The GLBT traveler is already part of Scottsdale’s demographic,” says Lauren Simons, vice president of marketing for the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We are updating our Scottsdale visitor guides and Web site to ensure this travel segment can more easily access the experiences they are seeking while visiting Scottsdale.”

Scottsdale is looking to increase exposure to the GLBT community through the launch of its new Web site, http://www.glbtscottsdale.com/ or http://www.lgbtscottsdale.com/. The site offers a list of Scottsdale shopping locales, restaurants, nightlife, arts and cultural offerings, and gay-friendly resorts. It also includes links to several resources like the Greater Phoenix Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, Echo and IONAZ magazines, Phoenix Pride, and the Arizona Gay Rodeo Association.

The Scottsdale CVB also introduced an ad campaign on Gay.com and PlanetOut.com inviting the GLBT traveler to experience the warm hospitality and sophistication of Scottsdale. In addition, the CVB is looking to increase membership of businesses within the market that are geared specifically to the GLBT niche. Other marketing efforts include the addition of an article with activity and dining suggestions for the GLBT traveler within the 2007 Experience Scottsdale destination guide, which is scheduled for distribution in November 2006.

The Scottsdale CVB is responsible for marketing Scottsdale as a premier travel destination to national and international target audiences, including meeting and incentive planners, travel agents, tour operators and individual tourists.

LONG BEACH CVB WINS 11th STRAIGHT GOLD SERVICE AWARD!

(Long Beach CA—August 17, 2006) For the eleventh year in a row, the Long Beach California Area Convention & Visitors Bureau has won the GOLD SERVICE AWARD from “Meetings & Conventions Magazine.” This prestigious award was created to recognize those Convention & Visitors Bureaus that offer a level of customer service and satisfaction above and beyond normal expectations. The importance of the honor is enhanced by the fact that the winner is chosen not by the magazine staff but by a vote from the 70,000 meeting planners who are subscribers.

Barbi Mason, Vice President of Convention Services & Membership stated proudly, “This honor cannot be solicited or influenced. Meeting Planners and other hospitality partners vote for their choices based upon their personal experience from throughout the previous year. This award is not only a positive reflection of the CVB, but of our entire Long Beach hospitality community.”

In addition to the Gold Service Award, the Long Beach CVB has also received for the third consecutive year, both the Planners’ Choice Award from Meeting News Magazine and the Pinnacle Award from Successful Meetings Magazine.

Stephen M. Goodling, President & CEO of the Long Beach CVB said, “We are very pleased to once again receive this recognition of Long Beach as “one of the best” Bureau’s in the country.
